Project Summary
3D-CRT radiotherapy allows prostate tumours to be targeted more selectively. In collaboration with the UK's Institute of Cancer Research, IES developed a training and information site for 3D-CRT. The web site allows registered oncologists to work through a structured course with access to supporting material.
At the core of the site is a simulation of the clinical tool used for outlining target (e.g. the tumour) and protected (e.g. the bladder) areas on CT scan slices. Once outlining is complete, users are given instant feedback on the accuracy of their work based on “gold standard” outlines provided by experts from the Academic Unit of Radiotherapy and Oncology.
Brief Online training tool for radiologists on three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3D-CRT).
Benefits
  • Allows oncologists to get realistic training on a medical technology, 3D-CRT.
  • The site allows oncologists to undertake online 'exams' which are evaluated for CME.
  • Makes training on 3D-CRT much more available than previously possible.
  • Access is via the internet using a standard web browser, yet closely simulates the real clinical tool.
The web site provides a good tool for communicating new information as it occurs.
Outcomes The web site will go live in 2009 increasing the availability of training on 3D-CRT to oncologists and radiologists.
